Philippines: Bicol Region, A Gift of Nature

Image
Daraga, Albay As our plane approached Bicol International Airport, I felt a surge of excitement at the thought of seeing the famous Mayon Volcano with its perfect cone shape. I'd been warned that it’s often shrouded in clouds, but with two weeks in Bicol, I was optimistic about getting a clear view of this natural wonder.   Upon arriving and settling in Sorsogon, our first major excursion was to Daraga, Albay. Here, we explored the Cagsawa Ruins, a poignant historical site where the remnants of a basilica, originally built in the 1500s, stand. The church was buried when Mayon Volcano erupted, and today, the belfry still stands, with the majestic but elusive Mayon Volcano in the background. During our visit, Mayon was, predictably, hidden in clouds. Despite the cloud cover, we made the most of our day. We embarked on an exhilarating ATV ride around the tourist area, which gave us a different perspective of the lush landscape. For lunch, we met up with some family friends,...

Island Hopping: Tortola, BVI

Nestled in the heart of the Caribbean, Tortola beckons travelers with promises of pristine beaches, azure waters, and breathtaking vistas. My recent island hopping escapade in the British Virgin Islands offered a tantalizing glimpse into the allure of this tropical paradise. Before indulging in the allure of Tortola’s renowned beaches, I embarked on a journey to the summit of Mount Sage. The ascent offered a breathtaking panorama of the island and its neighboring islands, including the enchanting Jost Van Dyke, the tranquil Virgin Gorda, and the elusive Anegada & St. Croix and other uninhabited islands. From this elevated perch, I marveled at the splendor of both the British and US Virgin Islands.  Upon descending from the heights of Mount Sage, I eagerly made my way to one of Tortola’s crown jewels: Cane Garden Beach. As the island’s most popular beach destination, it beckoned with its pristine sands and crystalline waters. Despite the bustling crowds, I found solace in the em...

Island Adventure: Exploring the Gems of St. Kitts and Nevis Nestled in the heart of the Caribbean, the twin islands of St. Kitts and Nevis beckon travelers with promises of unparalleled beauty and rich cultural heritage. As the smallest nation in the Western Hemisphere, these islands may be petite in size, but they pack a punch when it comes to offering memorable experiences. Rather than confining myself to the enticing beaches, I embarked on a journey to discover the hidden treasures scattered across these captivating landscapes. My adventure began with the assistance of a friendly local driver turned tour guide, whose wealth of knowledge added depth to my exploration. From the vibrant capital city of Basseterre to the rugged terrains of Brimstone Hill Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage site, every corner of St. Kitts revealed a piece of its fascinating history. The echoes of British and French influence resonated through the streets, evident in architectural marvels like the clock tow...
