Exploring Alaska: A Journey Through Wilderness and Wonder

If you've been following my blog, you've likely read about my exhilarating encounters with the Aurora Borealis, my challenging hikes through the Chugach Mountains, and my thrilling drive along the iconic Seward Highway.  But this time, Alaska beckoned me on a different kind of adventure -- a cruise that promise to unveil the natural marvels of its coastline.



Exploring Ketchikan: Gateway to the Tongass National Forest

My journey began in Ketchikan, where I immersed myself in the lush greenery of the Tongass National Forest. Stretching from the Pacific Ocean to the Arctic Circle, this expansive rainforest is the second largest in the world, a sanctuary for diverse wildlife and a haven for nature lovers like myself. Walking beneath towering trees and listening to the symphony of birdsong, I felt humbled by the sheer scale and beauty of this ancient wilderness.

Juneau: Huskies and Humpbacks

Next, I ventured to Juneau, Alaska's capital accessible only by boat or plane. Here, amidst the rugged landscapes, I found myself dogsledding at the Musher Camp with Alaskan Huskies, the spirited companions known for their endurance in the legendary Iditarod race. Racing through snow-covered trails, guided by these magnificent dogs, was a thrilling homage to Alaska's rich history of dog mushing.

In Auke Bay, I embarked on a mesmerizing whale-watching expedition. Witnessing humpback whales engage in bubble netting—a rare feeding behavior where whales create a circle of bubbles to trap fish—was a spectacle that left me in awe of nature's ingenuity and grace. 

Juneau is renowned for being a habitat and sanctuary for bald eagles.  I had the opportunity to witness bald eagle soaring overhead, fishing along the shore, perched on post along the Aukes Bay Pier, and perched on treetops along scenic coastline.   

Serendipity at Icy Strait Point

Inclement weather altered our plans, leading our ship to dock overnight at Icy Strait Point instead of Skagway. This unexpected turn of events granted me the opportunity to once again explore the Tongass National Forest, hoping to catch a glimpse of the elusive brown bear. Amidst mist-laden forests and the promise of wildlife sightings, I felt a deep connection to Alaska's untamed spirit.

Glacier Bay: Nature's Majesty Unveiled

Cruising through Glacier Bay National Park was undoubtedly the pinnacle of my Alaskan adventure. As our ship navigated through crystalline waters surrounded by towering glaciers and snow-capped peaks, I was humbled by the sheer grandeur of nature. The sight of calving glaciers and the profound silence of this icy wilderness left me in awe, reaffirming Alaska's status as one of the world's most magnificent landscapes.

Alaska's Endless Allure

My journey through Alaska was a testament to the state's unrivaled beauty and the resilience of its natural wonders. From rainforests echoing with the calls of wildlife to glaciers sculpting the landscape with timeless grace, every moment was a reminder of the importance of preserving our planet's most precious environments.

Whether you're drawn to the thrill of adventure or the serenity of nature's embrace, Alaska offers an unparalleled experience that speaks to the soul. Join me on this journey of discovery, where every corner reveals a new facet of Alaska's boundless allure—a land where the wilderness reigns supreme and the spirit of adventure knows no bounds.

The Banaue Rice Terraces: A Living Cultural Landscape

My interest in exploring the northern part of the Philippines started from looking at a piece of art at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco, California.   Among the display of ceramics and pottery engraved with gold and other decorative stuff,  a wooden carving of a male figure squatting on a platform with the lower arms on top of each other, resting upon his knees, caught my eye.  According to the docent, the wooden sculpture was called "Bului" which literally means "granary guardian" in the "Ifugao" tribe dialect. The carved wooden sculpture was set on a platform on top of another platform, a mortar.   Our docent explained the significance of the wooden mortar (which was used with the pestle, to separate the husk from the rice, sort of rice mill) and linked the story to the Rice Terraces in the Cordillera Mountains of the Philippines built 2000 years ago by the “Ifugao” tribe. Poland: The Wieliczka Salt Mine

One of the most spectacular UNESCO World Heritage Sites I visited this year was the Wieliczka Salt Mine near Krakow, Poland. It was founded in the 13th century to mine the rich deposit of salt. Salt mining stopped in 1996 when the low price of salt on the world market made it too expensive to mine and the mine was slowly flooding. But miners did more than just extract salt. They left behind them a breathtaking record of their time underground in the shape of statues of mythical, historical and religious figures.  Part of the salt mine became an art gallery, chapels, cathedral, and underground lakes. Today, Wieliczka Salt Mine is one of the most visited National Monuments in Poland. For safety reason, less than one percent of the mine is open to visitors, but even that is almost four kilometers in length. The Amazon, Part 3: The Tree Killer Tree

"There are 121 ecosystems in the world and 80 of those can be found in the Amazon, and it is in the Peruvian Amazon that you will find the green biome , more than two-thirds of the world's plant species,” said Vics, our naturalist-guide.   Through our small boat excursions, we were able to see the most bio-diverse part of the Amazon, the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve, the largest wetlands in the world.  We went through its narrow rivers, tributaries and black waters and lakes to hike the “Amazon Jungle”.
