Exploring the Gems of Comino and Gozo, Malta
Setting Sail to Comino Island
We started our adventure in Valletta, hiring a private boat to take us to Comino Island. The ride was quite rough, but the moment we reached the caves, it all felt worth it. The colorful rocks were truly a sight to behold. Entering Santa Marija Cave was a magical experience, as we floated on crystal-clear water that made us feel like we were in paradise.
Our next stop was the famous Blue Lagoon. This little slice of paradise is renowned for its crystal-clear turquoise waters and breathtaking scenery, and it certainly lived up to its reputation. As we approached the island, the sight of the Blue Lagoon was simply mesmerizing. The water was so clear and vibrant, it almost seemed unreal. What struck me most about the Blue Lagoon was how clean the water was, even with a considerable number of visitors. It's quite a popular spot, and I found myself swimming alongside people from all over the world. The diversity of the crowd added to the experience, as we all shared a common appreciation for this natural wonder.
The weather was quite hot, but the water was pleasantly cool, around 74 degrees Fahrenheit. It was the perfect temperature to provide relief from the heat and make swimming an absolute delight. I spent hours in the lagoon, floating, swimming, and just soaking in the beauty around me. The clarity of the water allowed me to see every detail beneath the surface, from the smooth sand to the occasional fish darting by. The area’s cleanliness was impressive, maintained by the absence of permanent buildings or market stalls. Instead, food carts selling fast food and drinks, including cocktails served in pineapples, lined the shores.
Despite the crowd, there was a sense of tranquility in the Blue Lagoon. The serene environment, coupled with the gentle lapping of the waves and the stunning backdrop of rugged cliffs, created a peaceful atmosphere. It was easy to lose track of time as I floated in the lagoon, feeling completely at one with nature.
In addition to swimming, I explored the surrounding area a bit. The caves and rocky outcrops added to the charm of the place, making it feel like a hidden gem despite its popularity. Every corner of Comino seemed to offer a new perspective of its natural beauty.
Overall, my experience in the Blue Lagoon was unforgettable. It's not every day you get to swim in such pristine waters, surrounded by a diverse group of people, all drawn by the same desire to experience something extraordinary. The combination of the clean, clear water, the pleasant temperature, and the stunning scenery made it a highlight of my travels in Malta. If you ever find yourself in this part of the world, a visit to the Blue Lagoon is an absolute must.
Fast Ferry to Gozo
Having previously savored the culinary delights of the island of Malta, I was eager to explore the lesser-known foodie paradise of Gozo. Little did I know that Gozo is renowned as the culinary capital of Malta. So, on this recent visit, I was determined to explore the island of Gozo.
Determined to explore Gozo, I took the fast ferry the following morning. The round-trip ticket cost just 15 euros, and the journey was quick and comfortable, taking only 30-40 minutes and offering convenient amenities like a toilet.
Eager to delve into Gozo’s food scene, I struck up a conversation with a fellow passenger. It turned out he was giving his cousin a tour of Gozo and kindly invited me to join them. We hired a cab and began our tour at the miraculous Ta’Pinu Cathedral. The cathedral was a breathtaking start to our adventure.
Next, we headed to Ramla Beach, known for its unique red sand. We enjoyed a delightful seafood lunch by the seaside, with the water providing a soothing backdrop. While my companions decided to relax at the beach, I opted to explore more of Gozo on my own.
I returned to Victoria, Gozo’s charming town center, and visited the impressive citadel. The historic fortress offered stunning views and a glimpse into Gozo’s rich history. I spent the afternoon wandering through the town, shopping for souvenirs, and soaking in the local atmosphere.
My visit to Gozo and Comino was a perfect blend of natural beauty, culinary delights, and cultural exploration. It reaffirmed that Malta's smaller islands have just as much to offer as the mainland, if not more.
