Malta: Unveiling the Enchantment

Malta, a small yet enchanting gem nestled in the Mediterranean Sea, defies expectations and transports visitors to a world that seems plucked from the pages of a fairytale. From the mesmerizing cityscape of Valletta perched atop ancient fortifications to the captivating allure of Mdina, where history and modernity coexist seamlessly, my recent journey to Malta was a dream come true. 



Valletta: A Citadel of Dreams:

Upon arriving in Malta, the city of Valletta greeted me with a scene that looked straight out of a storybook. The city, with its honey-hued stone buildings that blend harmoniously with the surrounding rocks, exudes an aura of timeless elegance. Sitting atop mighty fortifications, Valletta is not just a city; it's a living testament to centuries of history, resilience, and architectural brilliance. As I wandered through its labyrinthine streets, I couldn't help but feel as though I had stepped into another world, where the past and present coexist in perfect harmony. The grand architecture, cobblestone streets, and colorful balconies transported me to another era. The panoramic views from the city's bastions were nothing short of breathtaking, overlooking the glistening waters of the Mediterranean.



A Complete Journey in One Place:

Mdina is a microcosm of everything that makes Malta extraordinary. It's a place where time seems to stand still, yet it offers a modern-day escape filled with all the conveniences one could desire. The blend of historic charm and contemporary amenities is seamless. Amidst the narrow streets, I found charming hotels that offered comfort without compromising on authenticity. The restaurants served up local delicacies that tantalized my taste buds, and the view of the surrounding countryside was nothing short of breathtaking.

Enclosed within thick stone walls, Mdina felt like a medieval enclave frozen in time. It was a treasure trove of history and culture. I explored the Cathedral Museum, where priceless artifacts and religious relics were on display, offering insights into Malta's deep-rooted faith.

The Museum of Natural History was another fascinating stop, filled with an array of specimens showcasing the island's unique flora and fauna. It was a journey through Malta's natural world, from its diverse ecosystems to its rich geological history.

One of the most intriguing experiences was visiting the Dungeon Museum, which provided a glimpse into the darker chapters of Malta's history. The dimly lit chambers and haunting exhibits vividly portrayed the island's struggles and resilience. 


Amidst these historical adventures, I dined at a modern restaurant, savoring the delectable flavors of Maltese cuisine. From fresh seafood to savory pastries, every meal was a delightful surprise for my taste buds. The Mediterranean influence was evident in the vibrant dishes, making dining in Malta a true gastronomic adventure.

My visit to Malta was an enchanting blend of history, culture, and culinary delights. It felt like I had stepped into a living storybook, where every street, museum, and meal told a captivating tale of this remarkable island nation.

NEPAL: Durbar Square Before the Earthquake

I was writing my blog about Nepal’s UNESCO World Heritage and historic sites very late last night (05-12-15 in Nepal) when I happened to check my Instagram and saw a posting about Kathmandu after a 7.4 magnitude earthquake hit Nepal yet again. I get emotional just by looking at the photos and videos I took from my recent trip to Nepal let alone a video of a chaotic Kathmandu. The Banaue Rice Terraces: A Living Cultural Landscape

My interest in exploring the northern part of the Philippines started from looking at a piece of art at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco, California.   Among the display of ceramics and pottery engraved with gold and other decorative stuff,  a wooden carving of a male figure squatting on a platform with the lower arms on top of each other, resting upon his knees, caught my eye.  According to the docent, the wooden sculpture was called "Bului" which literally means "granary guardian" in the "Ifugao" tribe dialect. The carved wooden sculpture was set on a platform on top of another platform, a mortar.   Our docent explained the significance of the wooden mortar (which was used with the pestle, to separate the husk from the rice, sort of rice mill) and linked the story to the Rice Terraces in the Cordillera Mountains of the Philippines built 2000 years ago by the “Ifugao” tribe. Poland: The Wieliczka Salt Mine

One of the most spectacular UNESCO World Heritage Sites I visited this year was the Wieliczka Salt Mine near Krakow, Poland. It was founded in the 13th century to mine the rich deposit of salt. Salt mining stopped in 1996 when the low price of salt on the world market made it too expensive to mine and the mine was slowly flooding. But miners did more than just extract salt. They left behind them a breathtaking record of their time underground in the shape of statues of mythical, historical and religious figures.  Part of the salt mine became an art gallery, chapels, cathedral, and underground lakes. Today, Wieliczka Salt Mine is one of the most visited National Monuments in Poland. For safety reason, less than one percent of the mine is open to visitors, but even that is almost four kilometers in length.
